Kelsey Beckmann has been running for seven years. She’s been coached by Boulder Underground’s founder, Matt Hensley, for six of those years, starting in late 2013.

Before that, she was a soccer player at the collegiate level. While she still misses the rhythm of the game and side tackling, she thinks running is the most freeing form of movement.

In 2018, she ran an Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon at the California International Marathon, running 2:44:20. She said running the trials qualifier “felt like a combination of victory and momentum”.

Victory because it felt like closure after leaving soccer unfulfilled. Momentum because she had tried to qualify for the Olympic Trials in 2015 and it didn’t happen “by a lot”.

The handwork and effort she put in after the disappointment of 2015, which ultimately paid off in 2018, taught her things that don’t come easily are still worth working for.

This was an important perspective to gain at the right time. Because six months before her 2:44:20 at CIM, Kelsey started a new business, Meteor Nutrition, and starting a new business is hard.

Since then, as a registered dietitian and nutritionist, and knowing that hard things are worth working for, she has helped athletes fuel their way to Olympic Trials qualifiers as well.

Kelsey will be on the starting line at the 2020 Olympic Trials in Atlanta, Georgia on February 29.
